What Is a Tunnel Boring Machine?

A TBM is a large, cylindrical machine used to bore tunnels through soil and rock with a circular cross-section. It combines excavation, muck removal and, in many designs, tunnel lining (segment) installation into a single continuously advancing system, operating in confined, enclosed conditions far from easy access for maintenance.

Why Hydraulics Power TBM Systems

TBMs need very high torque at low, precisely controlled speeds — exactly the operating range where hydraulic motors outperform many electric drive alternatives.
